Savings goal calculator

How long until you hit your target, and how much a month you'd need to get there by a date you choose.

How it works

Put in your goal, what you've saved already, your savings rate and how much you can put away each month. The calculator adds your monthly saving and the interest month by month until you reach the goal.

Give it a number of months too, and it works backwards to tell you how much you'd need to save each month to get there in time.

Worked example

Saving for a £5,000 emergency fund from £500, at £200 a month and 4.5% interest, gets you there in under two years. Interest does some of the lifting along the way.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I keep savings for a goal?

For a goal within a few years, an easy-access or regular savings account keeps the money safe and reachable. See this week's best savings rates.

How big should an emergency fund be?

A common rule of thumb is three to six months of essential spending. Even a smaller buffer helps you avoid borrowing when something goes wrong.

Does it include tax?

No. It shows interest before tax. Most people can earn some interest tax-free under the Personal Savings Allowance.
